Talking about sewing…

I started sewing when my children were small.  I had a friend, Deloris, who was an excellent seamstress.  She made beautiful coats, suits, dresses, you name it.  She taught me a lot although to this day I don’t do a hand stitch that looks decent.  My new sewing machine is a Singer and it is totally different from the Singer I had so many years ago.  I bought it thinking I would use it mostly for mending and hemming.  I honestly cannot get the bobbins filled right.  I called the Singer hotline which must be hot alright because I waited for over half an hour to talk to someone.  Come to find out there is only one person manning the Singer hotline and she is busier than  (rest of sentence deleted.)  Anyway, from your comments yesterday I can see that I am not alone with this bobbin thing.   When I finally did get the Singer hottie hotline girl she talked a bunch of rigmarole to me and I still can’t get the bobbins filled right.  I have thread wound around just about everything when I am finished.

But hey, that is OK.  I will figure it out.  Besides my mom always told me that each stich I sewed on Sunday I would take out with my nose in heaven.  Even back some 40 odd years ago my mom had faith that I would make it to heaven some day.  I am trying mom.

It stayed lovely and cool yesterday with the temp only reaching 70 degrees.  However, not one more drop of rain and none in sight.

I have an appointment for a haircut this morning.  I have a lovely beautician although I am not liking the way she is cutting my hair as much as I did my previous beautician.  She left after 25 years to be a customer service rep at a company in Peoria.  I worked as a supervisor too many years to want to be a customer service rep for any company.  lol

On one of my other blogs I got a comment from my very first blogging friend when I first started blogging some 7 odd years ago.  She was a  young school teacher in Chicago and I can remember each of us trying  to decide what kind of content we wanted in our blog.  Thanks A for stopping by to see me.  It meant a lot to me.

I hope you all have a great day.  I am hoping to have a good hair day.  We shall see.  Please do stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. Bobbins are the reason I no longer sew. I was quite a lil seamstress, I just took to it naturally. But no longer. There's been so many days recently that you've been on my mind. If it weren't for you and the love and support you showed me I'm not sure I would be here. I love you and think of you often. Have a beautiful day. xoxoxo Shelly

  2. Sounds like a pretty complicated bobbin set up, sorry about that. Mine is easy to do on my Brother machine. Things like that take the fun out of sewing. Hope you figure it out.

  3. Hi Beth,

I need a haircut plus too. Have to get Amanda to fit me into her busy schedule, well both of our busy schedules.

I have very mixed feelings about blog content at the moment. I have a friend on here Sharon, who mentioned something about Satan attacking blogging and I think she is right.

Apart from anything else, it seems to have so much big brother is watching you devices on here now, guess they are needed, but I cannot get use to tracking everything (if I knew how to do it in the first place) and being tracked.

Ah well, never mind, much more important things to worry about, even if worrying did any good, which we both know it doesn't.

    Hugs Nita.

  4. That surprised me. My Janome is so easy to thread a bobbin. It barely takes more than a minute. I hope you get it soon.

  5. Sis..sometimes you can go to a fabric store and they can assist you or show you things to help with a problem you might have. I know the ones here in Michigan have helpers in them,Beverly Fabric or JoANN fabrics. Good luck with that bobbin thing I am no sewer at all, mom was the sewer in our family. XXOO

  6. My grandmothers were both quite the seamstresses however that has not really carried on through the generations around here in fact I'm not even sure if we've got a working sewing machine around here. The closest thing to that would be on my Mom's end because she absolutely loves needle point. We have a high of 69 tomorrow...I have a hard time believing that but they say Canada is sending us a cold front...time will tell.

Hope you like your haircut - I know what you mean - it is hard to get the cut I want even if I bring in pictures!

  11. A hair cut always makes me feel better. I agree done CS for many years can be a pain. My job of sch apts / confirming ppl info sometimes can be the same .. ugh.

    I hope it stays cool!!!

  12. I think the problem is that you are not technically minded, and you zone out as soon as someone starts to spout out technical jargon.

  13. I hope you have a "good hair day" with your haircut.

One of the very few things about the "good old days" is the presence of someone in the store who actually was able to answer questions about the product we bought. Customer Service in those days was more than waiting on the "next available technician.":)

  14. Good hair is super important so I hope it all turned out well:) I know it scares me everytime I go in for a haircut:) Love sewing stories.....my mother still has that old Singer sewing machine....saved my large family lots of money every year. That's one heavy machine!

  15. I hope you like your haircut. I used to sew a lot but not so much anymore. The main reason is my sewing machine doesn't work as well as it used to. I hope you can get your bobbin figured out. Have a great day!

  16. I still sew on the cabinet Singer that my mom bought 2nd hand in the 50's.
I was thinking...maybe if you google how to do the fill on you bobbins, it might give you pictures to follow. Worth a try.:)

  18. This post made me laugh....Singer "hottie" (I don't know how to cross out a word like that...wish I did) hotline girl. lol I can just hear your frustration. I have felt the same with my blu-ray player trying to get the app to work to let me view my pictures from Picasa...finally figured it out, but lausy, it took me FOREVER. I wish I'd have thought about googling it. I might have found a video.

I just hate trying to find someone to cut my hair. I had the best beautician in America for about 8 years....she was not from America, but boy, she was wonderful!!! I was horrified to find out she just up and sold her three salons and left town without even telling us she was leaving. I was left to cut my hair myself because I don't trust anyone else. I hope yours does a great job tomorrow and makes you a happy camper!

  19. The sewing machine I have makes bobbins so easy to re-fill, and it even threads its own needle, which I LOVE it to do for me, these days. Since I have to wear glasses, self-threading needles make my life SEW much EASIER!

  20. I sewed when I was much younger. Bobbins can be very frustrating and I hate learning anything new these days!
Hope your hairstyle will be just right! We have appts. on Thurs.

  21. I like to sew, but all machinery does give trouble from time to time. I find it is harder to learn new things now that I am older. But I keep at it and enjoy what I can. I hope it all gets worked out for you and that you have fun sewing. Hugs.

  22. I might have a lot of trouble if my very simple old sewing machine ever dies. I wouldn't have a clue how to use these new fangled machines. Best of luck with yours. I hope your haircut works out, too. :)

  25. Hello Beth, what a pity you've got so much problems with your bobbins, and are not getting the support you should have, I too used to sew all my children's clothes and many of my own [shift dresses were so easy] I've still got the same machine i bought over thirty years ago and is still in good working order, though it is basic, but nowadays it's only used to do straight seams or take up hems. Hope you got a satisfactory haircut, and don't hae to go out with a bag over your head LOL
